Breast cancer screenings are important tests used to detect breast cancer early, when it is more treatable. Women with a family history of breast cancer, a personal history of breast cancer, or other risk factors may need more frequent or additional screening tests. Early detection and treatment of breast cancer can improve outcomes and increase the chances of a successful recovery.
The two most common breast cancer screening tests are mammograms and ultrasounds.
- Mammogram: A mammogram is a low-dose X-ray that captures images of the breast tissue. Mammograms are recommended for women starting at age 40, and may be done every one to two years depending on individual risk factors. Mammograms are the most effective tool for detecting breast cancer in women with no symptoms.
- Ultrasound: An ultrasound uses sound waves to produce images of the breast tissue. Ultrasounds may be used in addition to mammograms to evaluate breast changes, such as lumps or abnormalities, and to further evaluate breast tissue in women with dense breasts.
